2025 Is in Sight: A Year-End Reflection from Dr. Richard Shuldiner on Living Fully with Low Vision
As 2025 draws to a close, I’m proud to reflect on what has been a milestone year for the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS). Across the country—and beyond—we’ve seen powerful momentum in how people understand and approach vision loss. From expanding our network to raising awareness, this year proved that there truly is life after vision loss.
At IALVS, we believe in equipping individuals with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to regain independence. And in 2025, more people than ever reached out for help, shared their stories, and took that first step toward rediscovering what’s possible.
Raising Awareness Like Never Before
In February, we launched one of our strongest efforts yet around Low Vision Awareness Month, and the response was incredible. Patients, doctors, and families across the U.S. and Canada engaged with our message: low vision doesn’t have to mean giving up your lifestyle. We’re already excited to build on that momentum in February 2026.
Beyond just awareness, we’ve seen a shift in understanding. More individuals now recognize that low vision optometrists are uniquely equipped to offer personalized solutions—from device recommendations to helping patients drive again, read, or safely navigate their homes.
Growing the IALVS Network
This year, our IALVS family grew stronger than ever. We welcomed new low vision optometrists from across the United States, Canada, and even beyond North America—expanding our reach and reinforcing our mission: to help as many people as possible experience life fully, even with vision loss.
As our network grows, so does our ability to share knowledge, refine care, and bring innovative tools into the hands of those who need them most.
Staying Ahead of the Curve—And Grounded in Care
Low vision devices continue to evolve rapidly, and 2025 brought exciting advances in wearable technology, digital magnification, and screen accessibility tools. But while staying current is more important than ever, one thing remains constant: there’s no replacement for the care and guidance of a low vision optometrist.
These tools are only as powerful as the plan behind them. That’s where our doctors step in—to assess your needs, customize your care, and ensure you’re not just handed a device, but supported in learning how to use it meaningfully.
A Heartfelt Thank You
To every patient who reached out for help this year: thank you. You are the reason we do what we do. And to the families and caregivers who support them, your dedication matters more than words can express.
To our IALVS doctors: your compassion, commitment, and expertise continue to transform lives in ways that far surpass what any standard treatment can offer.
Takeaway for 2026:
Let 2026 be the year you or a loved one takes back control. Set a goal—whether it’s driving, reading, or simply feeling more confident—and let a low vision doctor help you get there.
