Reflections from Dr. Richard Shuldiner, Founder of IALVS: Celebrating Our Vision and Values 

As we approach the close of another year, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable achievements of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) and the incredible dedication of our members. When I founded IALVS, my vision was to create a community of like-minded low vision specialists who believed in one core truth: there is life after vision loss. Today, I am immensely proud of how far we’ve come and the lives we’ve touched together. 

A Community of Purpose and Passion 

IALVS stands out not just for what we do, but for how we do it. Every member of our organization carries forward our guiding principles, working tirelessly to help patients with vision-limiting conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy reclaim their independence. It’s not just about prescribing low vision devices; it’s about instilling hope, building confidence, and proving that life’s possibilities don’t end with vision loss. 

Our core values—integrity, commitment, excellence, teamwork, and the value of the individual—aren’t just words on paper. They are the foundation upon which we’ve built a trusted network of low vision specialists who are changing the culture of eye care and making a tangible difference in the lives of patients.
